LINEAGE OF HOLY MOTHERS

 A Personal Reflection on Mothers of Faith

Hannah, mother of Samuel:  in 1 Sam. 1&2

she proclaimed her Magnificat, and was

mother of a prophet;

Mother of the Maccabeus Brothers,

herself a martyr and the mother of martyrs;

Mother of the Virgin-Mother of the Messiah,

known to us as St. Anne;

St. Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist,

relative and forerunner of the Lord;

St. Monica, mother in prayer and sorrow for her

wayward son, now our St. Augustine

St. Macrina the Elder, mother & grandmother of

monastics and the bishops, Saints Basil and Gregory of Nyssa;

St. Frances of Rome, mother of a kidnapped child,

a woman of strength and compassion in the midst

of war, founder of the Benedictine Oblates Sisters

of the Tor de Specchi;

St.  Jane Frances de Chantel, mother and widow,

spiritual companion of the bishop, St. Francis de Sales,

and founder of the Visitation Sisters;

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, widowed mother, convert,

and founder of the Sisters of Charity in America;

Bl. Zelie Martin, mother of 9, four flew to heaven in childhood; a business woman who died of breast

cancer when her youngest, St. Thérèse was 4 yrs. old

and four other daughters  who were to become nuns

and are being considered for canonization;

Adrianna von Speyr, convert, step mother, mystic and stigmatic, founder of the Community of St. John;

Ven. Conchita de Armida, mother of 9, spark of the Holy Spirit for the establishment of five religious institutes, and prophetic voice of the grace of Mystical Incarnation;

St. Gianna Molla, expectant mother who sacrificed her life to save the child in her womb;

Grace filled Mothers of our own family lineage;

We ask the prayers of all the holy mothers who have preceded us.

We pray for the next generation of holy mothers needed in the world.

We ask the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ, true God and true man; Mother of God and Mother of the Church; Mother of each and all of God’s children.
